Sandburg Men Take Home Title at Elgin Spartan Classic

ELGIN — The Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team won the championship of the Elgin Spartan Classic after winning both games in the tournament over the weekend.

The Chargers (9-3) defeated Kalamazoo Valley 86-70 on Friday in the semifinals before beating the host Spartans 68-57 on Saturday in the championship game and have won six of their last seven contests.

Sandburg had five players reach double figures against Kalamazoo Valley, led by 13 points apiece from Myles Estrada (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) and Atem Agot (East Moline, Ill./United Township). Agot also added a game-best 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Connor Barnett (Fulton, Ill./Fulton) contributed 12 points and had three assists, and Eric Price (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) scored a dozen after coming in off the bench. Jean Luc Wilson (East Moline, Ill./United Township) scored 10, had three assists and picked up two steals for Sandburg, which led 40-26 at halftime.

Wilson paced the Chargers in the title game with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting and hit 3 of his 5 3-point tries. Estrada scored 13 for Sandburg against the Spartans, and Matt Williams (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) had 12 points and a team-best seven rebounds. Barnett scored 11 and Agot totaled 10 points for the Chargers, who jumped out to a 23-7 lead in the early going and led 42-35 at the break.
